How we film in 16K VR180

Why we shoot VR180 rather than 360, how the depth is actually built, what all those pixels are for, and why the sound matters more than people expect.

People often assume the hard part of immersive travel filming is the camera. It is not. The camera is the easy decision. The hard part is standing in a beautiful place and choosing where to put a tripod so that a stranger, months later and thousands of kilometres away, feels like they are actually there.

This is how we approach it, and why we made the format choices we did.

We shoot VR180, not 360

The obvious question is why we would deliberately throw away half the sphere. The answer is that we are not throwing anything away, we are spending it.

A 360 camera divides its sensor and its bitrate across everything around it, including the ground, the sky, and whatever is directly behind the camera. In practice, most of that is not where anyone is looking. In a travel scene, attention lives in the front half of the view: the coast, the valley, the street, the animal. VR180 takes the same pixels and the same bandwidth and concentrates them where your eyes actually go, which is why a VR180 scene consistently looks sharper than a 360 scene shot on comparable gear.

There is a second reason, and it is the more important one. Full-sphere capture makes stereo depth extremely difficult to do convincingly, because a stereo pair only works for a given viewing direction. VR180 does not have that problem: two lenses, spaced roughly like human eyes, pointing the same way you are. The result is real, geometric depth rather than a depth effect. The honest cost is that there is nothing behind you. We think that is a fair trade, because in a well-composed scene you have no reason to turn around, and hiding a tripod, a crew and a bag of batteries behind the camera means we can put the camera in places a 360 rig simply cannot go.

What 16K is actually for

Sixteen thousand pixels across sounds like a spec-sheet number, and it would be, if it were spread across a flat screen. In VR180 it is not.

Wrap that image around the front half of your vision and the number that matters becomes pixels per degree: how much detail lands in the small patch of the world your eye is pointed at right now. A 16K VR180 capture puts enough there that texture survives. Grass reads as individual blades rather than a green wash. Water has structure. Distant ridgelines stay ridgelines instead of dissolving into a smudge.

We capture well above what any headset can currently display, and we do it deliberately. Every step after capture costs detail: stitching, colour work, encoding, then the headset's own optics. Starting with a surplus means the version that reaches your eyes still has something left. It also means the same masters will still hold up on headsets that have not shipped yet, which matters when you have travelled a long way for a shot you cannot easily repeat.

Depth is the thing people actually feel

If you show somebody a VR180 scene and ask what impressed them, they rarely say resolution. They say it felt real. That is stereo depth doing the work.

Two lenses, separated by roughly the distance between human eyes, record two slightly different views of the same scene. Your brain does what it always does with two slightly different views and builds a solid, measurable world out of them. A rock two metres away sits two metres away. The cliff behind it recedes. You can feel the gap between them.

That geometry is unforgiving, which is why so much of our decision-making happens before we press record. Stereo needs something close to read against something far, so a scene with nothing in the near field feels flat no matter how spectacular the view is. It also punishes camera height: put the lenses at the wrong height and the whole world quietly feels like a model. We set the interaxial spacing and the camera height to human scale, every time, because the moment a viewer's body disagrees with what it is seeing, the illusion is gone.

Motion follows the same logic. When we move, we move slowly, smoothly and in a straight line, at something close to walking pace. Fast movement in VR180 is not exciting, it is uncomfortable. A large part of the library is filmed from a fixed position for exactly that reason, and those experiences are gathered in the still and calm collection.

The sound of the actual place

The most common shortcut in immersive video is to shoot a beautiful location and then lay a music bed over it. We do not do that, and it is one of the decisions we feel most strongly about.

We record the sound of the place we are standing in: the specific tide, the specific wind through the specific trees, the specific quality of quiet a valley has at dawn. A place's audio carries an enormous amount of information about where you are, and your ears notice a mismatch long before your conscious mind does. When the sound is real, your body relaxes into the scene. When it is a library track, something never quite settles, even if you cannot name what is wrong.

It is also the reason our calmer experiences work as well as they do. A river genuinely sounds like that. There is nothing to argue with.

Choosing where to stand

All of the above is craft you can learn. The part that stays hard is the choosing.

An immersive scene has no frame, so composition becomes a question of position rather than cropping. You cannot fix a bad spot in the edit, because there are no edges to hide behind. We spend a lot of time walking a location before anything is set up, looking for the place where the near field, the middle distance and the horizon all have something worth giving your attention to, and where the light will do what we need for the length of the take.

Then we mostly wait, which is the least glamorous and most useful part of the job.
