Virtual field trips, in VR180

What the phrase actually means now, what this format is good at, and which real places to start with. Written for parents and teachers, with honest notes on what it does not do.

Three different things share the same name

Search for a virtual field trip and you will be offered three quite different products. A live video call with a guide standing in a museum or a research station. A game-like 3D world that students move through with a controller. And filmed video of a real place that you look around from where the camera stood. All three are useful. They are not interchangeable, and the disappointment usually comes from expecting one and getting another.

We make the third kind. Every experience in our library is a real location filmed on site in VR180: two lenses set at roughly human eye spacing, pointed at the 180 degrees in front of you, recorded in 16K. Because there are two lenses, the picture has real depth. A cliff edge is genuinely away from you, a mangrove root is genuinely at arm's length, and the size of a temple lands the way size lands in person.

What it does not do is let you walk around, pick things up or ask a question. There is no interaction and no narration, only the place and the sound recorded in it. That is a real limitation, and it is also why a two minute clip can carry a discussion for ten.

Geography without the bus

Landforms are the clearest win, because scale is the thing textbooks cannot give you. A cross section of a glacial valley is a diagram. Standing in one, with the moraine walls either side, is a different sort of memory.

Ecosystems, habitats and animals

Nature footage works well here for an unglamorous reason: a lot of it was already filmed from a fixed spot, so the animals set the pace and nobody has to steer.

Culture, history and built places

Places people have made are the other strong category, partly because students often arrive with an image in their head from a photograph, and the depth quietly corrects it.

Running one at home with a single headset

One headset and one child is a perfectly good field trip. The structure matters more than the hardware.

  1. Watch it yourself first. Two minutes of preview tells you what questions the place will raise and whether the pace suits.
  2. Give them one thing to look for. Count the layers in the canopy, find where the ice meets the water, notice what the buildings are made of. A task turns looking into seeing.
  3. Take the headset off to talk. The conversation is the lesson. The clip is the prompt.
  4. Pair it with a map. Find the spot afterwards on the globe, and the visit stops being a video and starts being a location.
Worth knowing

Headset makers publish their own minimum age recommendations and comfort guidance, and those come before anything we would suggest. Our experiences also vary in motion: the still and calm collection is filmed from locked camera positions, which is the easier place to start with a younger viewer.

If you are buying for a classroom

Questions we get asked

What is a virtual field trip?

It is any trip a class or a family takes without leaving the room. In practice the phrase covers three different things: a live video call with a guide at a museum or a lab, a game-like 3D world you move through, and filmed video of a real place that you look around in. We make the third kind, filmed in VR180, which means a real location captured with two lenses at eye spacing so it has genuine depth.

How is VR180 different from a 360 video?

A 360 video surrounds you but is usually flat, because most of them are captured with a single lens per direction and have no stereo depth. VR180 covers only what is in front of you, which is where your eyes point anyway, and spends everything it saves on depth and detail. In practice a 180 clip looks more like a window and less like wallpaper.

Do you need a headset, or will a laptop do?

A laptop or phone will play the video and let you drag the view around, which is fine for previewing something before a lesson. The depth only exists in a headset, though, and the depth is the reason a canyon feels like a canyon. If you are choosing a headset, the browser-based ones need nothing installed.

How long is one of these, and how many fit in a lesson?

Most of our experiences run two to five minutes. That is deliberate: a short piece leaves time to talk about what everyone just saw, which is where the learning actually happens. Three or four short visits with discussion between them fills a period comfortably.

Is there narration or a lesson plan attached?

No. Our experiences carry the sound recorded on location, not a voiceover, and they are not built as lessons. That suits a teacher who wants to supply the framing themselves, and it will not suit someone who wants a scripted tour. It is worth knowing before you plan around it.
