The complete guide to VR travel (2026)

What it is, which formats exist, which headsets work, how to start watching in the next five minutes, and what picture quality actually depends on.

VR travel is watching real places in a virtual reality headset, filmed so the scene surrounds you and responds to where you look. Unlike a flat travel video, a VR travel experience is captured in stereo, so the beach, the valley or the street in front of you has genuine depth and human scale.

That definition rules a lot of things out on purpose. A drone video played on a television is not VR travel. Nor is a game world modelled to look like Iceland. What separates the category is that a camera was physically present in a real location, and that the recording preserves enough geometry for your eyes to treat it as a place rather than a picture.

We film this for a living, so treat what follows as an informed view rather than a neutral one. We have tried to be straight about the trade-offs, including the ones that do not flatter our own choices.

The formats, and why they are not interchangeable

Three quite different things get filed under "VR travel", and knowing which you are looking at explains most of the quality differences you will notice.

VR180

Two lenses, spaced roughly like human eyes, both pointing the same way. The result covers the front half of your vision in stereo. Because all the resolution and bitrate go into the half you are actually looking at, VR180 tends to look considerably sharper than a 360 clip shot on comparable equipment, and the stereo pair gives you real, measurable depth.

The cost is that there is nothing behind you. In a composed scene that rarely matters, because you have no reason to turn around, and it lets a crew and their gear stand behind the camera without appearing in shot. 360 video

Full sphere coverage, so you can look anywhere including behind and below. That completeness is genuinely useful for some jobs: walkthroughs of buildings, events where the interesting thing might be anywhere, and any scene where the viewer needs to be able to turn all the way around.

The trade is that the same pixels and the same bitrate now cover four times the area, most of which nobody looks at, so the part you are facing is softer. Convincing stereo is also much harder to achieve across a full sphere, and a lot of 360 travel content is therefore monoscopic, which reads as a very good photograph wrapped around you rather than a place you are standing in.

Photogrammetry and volumetric capture

Rather than recording video, these techniques reconstruct a location as three-dimensional data from many photographs or scans. The payoff is that you can move through the space and change your viewpoint, which no video format allows.

The limits are equally clear today: reconstructions struggle with anything that moves, water and foliage in particular, and they tend to look slightly synthetic on close inspection. It is a fast-moving area and worth watching. For photoreal moving scenes right now, stereo video still wins.

Rule of thumb

If the goal is to feel like you are standing somewhere real, look for stereo capture. If the goal is to look everywhere, 360 makes sense. If the goal is to walk around, you want a reconstruction, and you should expect a compromise on realism.

Hardware: what you actually need

Almost any current headset can play VR travel. The differences are in comfort, screen quality and how much fuss is involved in getting started.

Meta Quest is where most people begin, simply because most headsets sold are Quests. Quest 3 and Quest 3S have noticeably better optics than Quest 2, which matters for a format that lives or dies on fine detail. PICO headsets, particularly PICO 4 and PICO 4 Ultra, are strong video devices with comfortable weight distribution, and they are common outside North America. See the PICO page.

Two practical notes. Prescription lens inserts are worth it if you wear glasses, because glasses under a headset are uncomfortable and soften the image. And headset audio is better than people expect: for travel scenes recorded on location, the built-in speakers carry the place perfectly well.

How to start watching in a browser

The lowest-friction route into VR travel is the browser already installed in your headset. Nothing to download, nothing to sideload, and a link you can send to somebody else.

  1. Open your headset browser. Meta Quest Browser, the PICO browser or the Galaxy XR browser all work. Nothing needs enabling first.
  2. Type the address. On our library, explorepov.com/vr is a deliberately short address that drops you straight into a trailer, because typing in a headset is unpleasant.
  3. Press play, then press Enter VR. These are two separate presses. The page starts in a flat window, and Enter VR is what wraps the scene around you. Browsers require a real user gesture before entering immersive mode, so this cannot be skipped.
  4. Recentre and settle. Hold the headset's home button to face the right way, sit down, and give your eyes ten seconds. The depth needs a moment, and the player is climbing its quality ladder in roughly the same window.

What picture quality actually depends on

Resolution numbers dominate the marketing and explain surprisingly little. Three other things matter more.

Bitrate, not just pixel count

A high-resolution file starved of bitrate falls apart exactly where immersive video is most demanding: moving water, wind in foliage, fine texture at distance. Those are the hardest things to compress and the most common subjects in travel footage. A well-encoded lower tier routinely looks better than a badly encoded higher one, which is why streaming players climb a ladder of tiers rather than offering a single file.

Pixels per degree

The useful measure in a headset is not total pixels but how many land in the patch of world your eye is pointed at. Because VR180 spends everything on the front half of the view, a 16K VR180 capture delivers far more per degree than the same number spread over a full sphere. This is the single biggest reason two clips with identical spec sheets can look nothing alike.

Capture craft

The least technical factor is the most decisive. Camera height set to human eye level, lens spacing set to human eye spacing, something in the near field for the stereo to read against, slow movement or none at all, and the real sound of the location rather than a music bed. Get those wrong and no amount of resolution rescues the scene. Get them right and even a modest tier feels like standing there.

An honest look at the category

VR travel is small, and it is worth knowing the shape of it before you spend money.

There is a large amount of 360 travel footage on the general video platforms, much of it uploaded by enthusiasts. It costs nothing to sample and it is the quickest way to find out whether the format appeals to you at all. Expect the quality to vary enormously and expect most of it to be monoscopic, so it will feel like a wrapped photograph rather than a place.

There are guided and gamified virtual tourism apps, which add narration, quizzes or interactivity on top of imagery. If you want a lesson or an activity rather than a place, those are a better fit than anything we make.

There are map-derived and reconstructed environments, which are unbeatable for orienting yourself in a city and are not trying to be photoreal.

And there is a small group of studios, ourselves included, filming original stereo footage on location. It is expensive and slow, which is why the catalogues are smaller. What you get for that is depth that holds up and detail that survives, and there is no shortcut to it. Which of these suits you depends entirely on what you want out of the twenty minutes, and it is worth sampling more than one before deciding.

Is VR180 better than 360 video?

For travel, usually yes. VR180 concentrates all of its resolution and bitrate on the front half of your view, where your attention already is, and it supports convincing stereo depth. 360 covers everything around you but spreads the same pixels much thinner and rarely holds depth as well.

Does VR travel make people motion sick?

It can, though far less than gaming does, because the camera is either fixed or moving slowly in a straight line. Discomfort usually comes from fast or swaying movement. Starting with fixed-camera scenes and sitting down while you watch removes the problem for most people.

How much internet speed do I need?

Streaming VR180 uses a quality ladder, so it plays on most connections and simply picks a lower tier when bandwidth is short. For the higher tiers you want a stable connection with real headroom, ideally on 5GHz Wi-Fi with the headset in the same room as the router.

Can I watch VR travel without an account?
