Cambodia is the most people-facing destination we have filmed. Alongside the temples there is a working country in these frames: Ox Cart Ride passes rice fields and houses at cart pace, Floating Village Cruise crosses Tonlé Sap where whole communities live on the water, and The Mangroves sits you in the back of a small painted canoe as it threads a green tunnel. VR180 changes what that footage is. You are inside the boat rather than looking at a photograph of one, and the distance across to the person paddling is a real distance your eyes can measure.
The headline is still Angkor. Angkor Wat opens at sunrise over the reflecting pools and then moves in among stonework that has been standing for nearly nine hundred years, while Cambodias Ancient Temple finds a quieter one with the jungle grown back over it. Scale is the whole reason to watch these in a headset instead of on a screen. A temple gateway reads as a doorway on a monitor. Give your eyes proper depth cues off the individual blocks and it reads as the genuinely enormous object it is.
The jungle titles are the third strand. Jungle Giants stands among elephants as they bathe and feed and move around the camera, and Butterfly Paradise winds through a garden full of palms and flowers. Season matters more here than in most of the library: the dry months from November to March are when Angkor’s causeways are comfortable and Tonlé Sap sits at its lowest, and the wet season swells that lake to several times the size and lifts the floating villages with it.
If you only watch two, make them Angkor Wat, for sunrise on the reflecting pools and the reason most people come in the first place. The Mangroves is the opposite mood, two minutes low to the water with green closing in overhead.
