Every Greek title we have is Crete, and mostly western Crete, which is not the Greece of the small white island postcard. It is bigger, drier and far more mountainous, and the coastline changes character every few kilometres. Balos turns up twice, in The Blue Lagoon and Balos Beach, because that lagoon really is the colour it looks in the thumbnail, and because a shallow turquoise flat under red cliffs is a gift to a stereoscopic camera: strong colour separation sitting at three clearly different depths, which is precisely what a flat photograph collapses.
Loutro is the other anchor, a village on the south coast with no road into it. Coastal Charm sits in the harbour among the boats and lets time pass, and Seaside Village to Clifftop Chapel leaves town along the coastal path to a small white church with nothing but blue behind it. Between the two, Imbros Gorge heads inland and vertical: a hundred and sixty centimetres across at its narrowest and three hundred metres high, a set of numbers that means very little on a screen and quite a lot when both walls are genuinely beside you.
Crete has a long season. The south coast stays warm well past the point where most of Europe has given up, and the light through spring and autumn is lower and softer than the flat overhead glare of high summer, which is when the red rock and the white render actually separate rather than bleaching into each other. Seaside Streets and Colourful Sights is the town title, wandering Chania with its painted shutters, flower boxes and harbour front, and it is the one to open an evening with. Greek Church Odyssey is the most postcard-like thing in the set, a white chapel, turquoise water and a sunset, held still for two minutes.
Two to start with: Blue Lagoon Cliff Walk, which takes the red cliff path high above the turquoise of Balos and meets a few of the locals on the way. Coastal Charm is the still one, a harbour village with boats, clear water and nothing much happening, which is the point.
