There is a moment, usually about eight seconds into somebody's first proper VR180 experience, where their posture changes. They stop scanning the image the way you scan a photograph and they start standing in it. Sometimes they reach out. Almost always they go quiet.
That reaction has a name in the research literature, presence, and it is the whole reason we film the way we do. It is also fragile. Presence is easy to break and surprisingly hard to build, and the things that build it are not the things most people assume.
1. Depth, which means two lenses
Your brain works out how far away things are partly by comparing the slightly different image each eye receives. Hold a finger up and close one eye, then the other, and you can watch the shift. That shift is stereo disparity and it is doing more work than you think.
A normal video, however wide or however sharp, gives both of your eyes exactly the same picture. Your visual system reads that as flat, because it is flat, and no amount of extra pixels changes the verdict. This is why a 360 video on a phone is interesting rather than moving.
We film with two lenses set at roughly the spacing of human eyes, and we deliver two separate images to your two eyes. The waterfall in front of you is genuinely in front of you. The rock face at your shoulder is genuinely closer than the valley behind it. That single fact is the difference between a picture of a place and a place.
It is also why we care so much about where the camera stands. A shot with nothing near the lens has no near depth to show, so it looks flat even in stereo. A shot with a boulder at arm's length, a railing, a tree trunk, a bow of a boat, has something for your eyes to triangulate against, and it lands immediately.
2. Scale, which is mostly about eye height
The second thing your brain checks is how big everything is relative to you, and it uses your own eye height to do it. Put the camera at head height on a standing person and the world comes out at human scale. Put it two metres up on a pole and the same landscape quietly turns into a model village. Nobody consciously notices. Everybody feels it.
So we shoot from human eye height, from where a person would actually stand, and we let the horizon fall where your eyes expect it. When you look down there is ground beneath you at the distance ground should be. That sounds trivial written down. It is the difference between a cliff edge that makes your legs tighten and a cliff edge that does not.
The corollary is that camera movement has to behave like a person too. Movement that a body could not make is the fastest way to break presence, and it is uncomfortable besides. When we move, we move at walking pace, on the level, without sudden acceleration.
3. Resolution, but only in the way that counts
Resolution is the number everybody quotes and the one most often misunderstood. A 16K VR180 file is not sharper than a 4K television in the way that sounds. It is spreading its pixels across a 180 degree field of view instead of a rectangle in front of you, so what matters is not the total but the density: how many pixels land in each degree of your vision.
Once you frame it that way you can see why the numbers get large so fast. Cover half the world in front of somebody, in stereo, at a density where the texture on a stone wall survives, and the file gets enormous. That is what the resolution is for. It is not for bragging. It is for making the surfaces hold up when you lean in, which is exactly when presence is at its most vulnerable, because leaning in is the thing people do when they start to believe it.
No headset on sale today can display all of it. We shoot beyond the display anyway, so that the picture has somewhere to go as headsets improve, and so that the encode ladder is stepping down from a real master rather than stretching a small one. The detail is in how we film in 16K VR180.
4. Sound, which is half the effect and gets a tenth of the credit
Ask somebody what made a scene feel real and they will describe what they saw. Take the sound away and the whole thing collapses, immediately and obviously.
We record the sound of the place we are standing in and we use it. No music bed, no library ambience, no swell under the wide shot. If it was windy, it sounds windy. If a bird went past behind your left shoulder, it went past. If a place was almost silent, the recording is almost silent, and that near silence does more for presence than any score could.
It is a straight location track rather than a spatial or object based mix, and we would rather say that than let anybody assume more. What it is, is honest and unprocessed, and honest is what your ears are checking for. This is also why we keep telling people to turn the volume up further than feels necessary on headset speakers. Quiet recordings played quietly get thrown away by the room you are physically sitting in.
VR180 against 360, honestly
The obvious objection to everything above is that 360 gives you the whole sphere and we only give you half of it. That is exactly right, and it is a deliberate trade.
Every pixel and every bit of bandwidth spent behind your head is spent on something you are not looking at. Worse, a full sphere is much harder to shoot in true stereo, because the camera rig ends up in its own shot from some directions, and the usual fixes involve stitching seams or dropping to mono in places. The result is a format that covers more of the world with less depth in it.
We would rather put everything into the half you turned towards. In practice a well composed VR180 shot does not feel truncated, because you are facing the reason the shot exists. The honest cost is that you cannot turn all the way round, and if what you want is a room you can spin in, 360 is the format for that. Ours is the format for standing somewhere.

How to give yourself the best chance of it
Presence rewards a few small things. Sit or stand rather than lying down, so your body agrees with the horizon. Give it eight or ten seconds before deciding anything, because the effect builds rather than arriving. Start with a still scene rather than a moving one. And turn the sound up.
