What to expect

The camera stays in one place for the full 3 min, so nothing pans or lurches and you set the pace by turning your head. If fast motion in a headset does not agree with you, this is one of the gentler ways in.

It is filmed in stereoscopic VR180, which means depth is real: near things sit close, far things stay far, and the mountain reads at proper scale instead of flattening onto a screen. Look up, look to the edges of the frame, and take your time. There is nothing to steer and nothing to learn.

We tag this one relaxing, and it sits in Montenegro alongside the rest of what we have filmed there. It is included with a subscription.

Wild horses of Durmitor in VR180

Durmitor covers the mountainous north of Montenegro and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. It carries roughly 48 peaks above 2,000 metres, and deep river canyons cut along its edges. Between the peaks lie broad grass plateaus, the katun summer pastures that shepherds have used for generations. Horses have run loose on those pastures for decades, descended from working animals turned out to summer and never fully brought back in. They are usually described as wild and are more precisely unmanaged: unfenced, unshod, and entirely used to sorting out their own grazing.

We filmed them as a still scene, three minutes with the camera in one place, so the herd moves and the frame does not. We tag it Relaxing. Nothing pans or lurches, and you set the pace by turning your head to follow whichever animal is doing something.

Animals are the clearest case for stereoscopic VR180 there is. Depth tells you which horse is near and which is fifty metres out, and the herd spreads across real ground instead of overlapping into a single flat shape. It is also the difference between watching a field and being able to judge how close a large animal actually is.

Wild horses of Durmitor: common questions

Are there really wild horses in Durmitor?

Yes, though unmanaged is the more accurate term. They descend from working horses turned out onto the katun summer pastures of the Durmitor plateau and left to fend for themselves, and they now graze unfenced across the high grassland of the plateau.

Where is Durmitor National Park?

In the mountainous north of Montenegro, with deep river canyons along its edges. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 and holds around 48 peaks over 2,000 metres.

Can you see the Durmitor horses in VR?

Yes. We filmed them in stereoscopic VR180 with the camera held still for three minutes, so the herd moves around a fixed viewpoint. It plays natively on Apple Vision Pro and in the browser on Meta Quest, Pico and Samsung Galaxy XR.
