What to expect

The camera stays in one place for the full 2 min, so nothing pans or lurches and you set the pace by turning your head. If fast motion in a headset does not agree with you, this is one of the gentler ways in.

It is filmed in stereoscopic VR180, which means depth is real: near things sit close, far things stay far, and the water reads at proper scale instead of flattening onto a screen. Look up, look to the edges of the frame, and take your time. There is nothing to steer and nothing to learn.

We tag this one relaxing, and it sits in Norway alongside the rest of what we have filmed there. Create an account to watch this one in full.

Reine, Lofoten, in VR180

Reine is a fishing village on Moskenesoya, near the far end of the Lofoten chain, well above the Arctic Circle. Red timber rorbuer stand on stilts over the fjord, and behind them granite peaks such as Reinebringen rise more or less straight out of the sea, which is the detail that makes the place look unreal in photographs. The mountains are not especially tall by alpine standards, a few hundred metres, but they begin at zero, so the whole height is visible at once. The village has lived on cod for centuries and the wooden drying racks still go up each winter. The sun does not set from late May to mid July, and it does not rise for a stretch of the winter.

We filmed a viewpoint over the village and the fjord as a still scene, two minutes with the camera fixed, and the catalog marks it as built to loop. We tag it Relaxing, and the landscape type is waterway rather than mountain, because water is what the frame is organised around.

Depth is the whole argument for seeing Reine this way. A flat image stacks the peaks, the fjord and the houses into one plane and the scale disappears. In stereoscopic VR180 the water lies out in front of you, the village keeps its middle distance, and the mountains stand behind at their real remove.

Reine viewpoint: common questions

Where is Reine in Lofoten?

On the island of Moskenesoya, toward the southern end of the Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway, about 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle.

Can you visit Reine virtually?

Yes. We filmed a Reine viewpoint in stereoscopic VR180, two minutes with the camera held still and built to loop, so you can stand above the fjord in a headset. It plays natively on Apple Vision Pro and in the browser on Meta Quest, Pico and Samsung Galaxy XR.

Why does Reine look so dramatic?

Because its mountains start at sea level. Peaks like Reinebringen rise directly from the fjord with no foothills in between, so their full height is in view from the water. That vertical relief is exactly what stereoscopic VR180 preserves and a photograph flattens.
