What to expect
The camera stays in one place for the full 3 min, so nothing pans or lurches and you set the pace by turning your head. If fast motion in a headset does not agree with you, this is one of the gentler ways in.
It is filmed in stereoscopic VR180, which means depth is real: near things sit close, far things stay far, and the mountain reads at proper scale instead of flattening onto a screen. Look up, look to the edges of the frame, and take your time. There is nothing to steer and nothing to learn.
We tag this one relaxing, and it sits in Iceland alongside the rest of what we have filmed there. It is included with a subscription.
Mulagljufur Canyon in VR180
Múlagljúfur, which nearly everyone types as Mulagljufur, cuts into the hills of south east Iceland, below the great ice caps of the south coast. It is a gorge lined in thick moss, with waterfalls dropping in from the side valleys, the tallest of them falling around 120 metres, and a view back down the valley toward the glacier lagoons and the ice.
We filmed it as a still scene from the cliff edge, a little over two minutes with the camera fixed, so nothing pans or lurches and you choose where to look. We tag it Relaxing. Birds work the updraughts in front of the walls, which is the only thing in the frame that moves quickly.
A canyon is the hardest subject for a flat photograph, because the one measurement that matters is the one a screen throws away. In stereoscopic VR180 the near rim sits close to you, the far wall stays across the gap, and the waterfall reads at the distance it actually falls, so the scale of the cut stops folding onto a single plane.
