What to expect

The camera stays in one place for the full 3 min, so nothing pans or lurches and you set the pace by turning your head. If fast motion in a headset does not agree with you, this is one of the gentler ways in.

It is filmed in stereoscopic VR180, which means depth is real: near things sit close, far things stay far, and the water reads at proper scale instead of flattening onto a screen. Look up, look to the edges of the frame, and take your time. There is nothing to steer and nothing to learn.

We tag this one relaxing, and it sits in Montenegro alongside the rest of what we have filmed there. It is included with a subscription.

Black Lake, Durmitor, in VR180

Black Lake, Crno jezero in Montenegrin, lies at about 1,416 metres a short walk from Zabljak and is the best known of the glacial lakes in Durmitor National Park. It is really two basins, the large and the small lake, joined by a shallow channel that can dry to a strip of gravel by the end of a hot summer. Dense black pine forest comes right down to the shore, which is where the name comes from, and the peak of Meded rises straight above the far end. A level path rings the whole thing in an hour or so, and wooden rowing boats are pulled up along the near bank for anyone who wants to be out on the water.

We filmed it as a still scene at the end of the day, three minutes with the camera fixed, so the light changes and nothing else does. We tag it Relaxing, and the landscape type is waterway. There is nothing to steer and nothing to learn.

Reflections are where a flat photograph and a stereoscopic capture part company. On a screen the mirrored peak and the real peak sit on the same plane. In VR180 the surface of the water is clearly a surface at your feet, the far shore is genuinely across the lake, and the boats in the foreground have thickness rather than being a shape cut out of the picture.

Black Lake, Montenegro: common questions

Where is Black Lake in Montenegro?

In Durmitor National Park in the north of the country, about a 20 minute walk from the town of Zabljak, at roughly 1,416 metres. It is the largest and most visited of the park’s glacial lakes and a level path runs the full way around it.

Why is it called Black Lake?

For the dark reflection of the black pine forest that grows right to the shoreline. The lake is actually two connected basins, Veliko and Malo jezero, and the channel between them can shrink to almost nothing late in a dry summer.

Can you visit Black Lake in VR?

Yes. We filmed it in stereoscopic VR180 with the camera held still for three minutes as the sun went down. It plays natively on Apple Vision Pro and in the browser on Meta Quest, Pico and Samsung Galaxy XR, alongside the rest of our Montenegro set.
